  Operation Genesis » FAQ

Q: My graphics are running slowly.
A: Try reducing the resolution to 640x480. Try reducing the color bit-depth in the in-game options screen to 16bit. Also try reducing the texture-depth to 16bit. If this doesn't help enough try reducing the texture quality. If this STILL isn't helping enough start reducing the terrain/particle/surface. This should definitely make a big difference.

Q: I have changed the graphics settings, but I'm still having problems with the game running slow. What now?
A: Make sure that you have no other applications running when you run "Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis". If you have virus protection software running, it may be performing file checking as "Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis" reads files. This can lead to performance loss. Please refer to your virus protection help for more information.

Q: I am using a GeForce3 and am getting some textures flickering. What should I do?
A: Please install the latest drivers for the video card. Please use version 40.72 (11/11/2002) or later.

Q: I am using an ATI Radeon 9700, and the game is crashing on start up. What should I do?
A: Please install the latest drivers for the video card. Please use version 6.13.10.6218 (11/2/2002) or later.

Q: I am using a Matrox Parhelia and there are missing polygons in the terrain and sky. What should I do?
A: Please install the latest drivers for the video card. Please use version 5.13.01.1172 or later.

Q: "Failed to Initialize Direct 3D. Please Ensure DirectX 8.1b is installed and DirectX 8.1b drivers on your video card."
A: Try, re-installing DirectX 8 from the JPOG CD. Once re-installed I noticed the Desktop icon was causing the problem as thats how Id normally access it, but using the start menu it would run fine, so create a new shortcut from there, by drag-dropping the "Play Operation Genesis" Icon to your desktop.

Q: The Game runs slow
A: Are you running any background programs? Have you got the latest drivers for your Graphics card? Even so, depending on what settings you put the game on and what Graphics card you has does determine how lagged the game will be. Try turning down some of the settings a bit untill it runs smoother for you.

Q: "SetupEnglish MFC Apllication has encounterd a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"
A: I found that just clicking on the Desktop logo or through the startup menu will avoid this. Since it appears when you try to edit the settings to, just go to: Universal Interactive\Blue Tongue Software\Jurassic Park Operation Genesis\JPOG\ And double click the File "Options" you can edit the settings in there as you would on the settings panel. Just make sure you make a backup in case something goes wrong!

  Operation Genesis » Options Help

⇒ Device:
The video card detected in your PC.

⇒ Driver:
The DirectX 8 driver installed for this video card.

⇒ Screen resolution
The available video modes. A higher bit depth improves visual quality, at the expense of performance for some (particularly older, 16MB) video cards. Higher resolutions will reduce performance (frame rate) when using high quality terrain, even with high-end video cards.

⇒ Highest quality Z-buffer
Selecting this reduces visual artefacts that may occur, at the expense of performance for some (particularly older, 16MB) video cards.

⇒ Texture quality:
LOW setting uses 16 bit textures.
HIGH setting uses 32 bit textures.
Having more bits in a texture reduces colour “banding” since colour transitions are smoother.
Older video cards may get some performance hit using 32 bit texturing, particularly when the video card doesn’t have much memory (16MB cards). For latest video cards there is no performance difference. The only advantage to lowering the quality is that they use less system memory, which may be an issue for machines without much memory (96MB and below).

⇒ Terrain detail
This option specifies how smooth the terrain should be. The higher the setting, the smoother the terrain at the expense of frame rate.

⇒ Terrain quality
The texturing quality of the terrain. The higher the setting, the more realistic the terrain will look. This option will be limited based on your video card’s capability. Reducing the quality may improve performance on some hardware. Reflective water is only available when the terrain quality is HIGH, due to hardware technical limitations.
This option will have the most significant visual impact of all options.

⇒ Model quality
This is the model quality in the foreground. Depending on this setting, some structures may look different. HIGH quality is very high, and will have a significant performance impact on all but the best video card/CPU machines.
This setting will have the most significant effect on performance of all options, particularly on less powerful machines.

⇒ Effects
This affects the quality of particle rendering (such as smoke). Increasing the quality incurs a slight performance cost.

⇒ Draw distance
Affects how far into the distance objects are drawn. Increasing this will allow you to see more of your park, but this will decrease the frame rate, particularly on less powerful machines.

⇒ Grass enable
Specifies whether or not to draw volumetric grass. Drawing grass is recommended only for powerful machines.

⇒ Reflective water
Select to get the best quality water. This may not be available on some hardware. Also, for this option to be accessible, the terrain quality must be set to HIGH.

Operation Genesis » Known Driver Issues

Hardware: Nvidia NFORCE Motherboards
Issue: Sound corruption; Intermittant crashes
Version fail: Nforce-105-release or earlier
Recommended: Nforce-win2k_2.00
Comments: There are some known issues using the Nforce motherboard with driver versions 105 or earlier under Win 2K. This isssues include sound corruption after an hours gameplay, and the possibilty of intermittant crashes which may hard lock a PC. These problems appear to be solved when using version 2.00. At the time this was written version 2.00 were the latest drivers available, no knowledge of newer drivers, or their performance was available.
